The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Remembering Bill Shaw ten years on.

It's hard to get my head around the fact that it was ten years today that my dear friend, second cousin, artist, cartoonist, drummer and seeker of wisdom and truth, Bill Shaw left us.

Bill was no follower of fashion, it was fashion that followed him. He lived for the moment, didn't suffer fools gladly and often showed them the error of their ways.

As a drummer he was sympathetic to his surroundings irrespective of the genre.

He was a unique person who, once you'd met him, you knew you'd been met and you never forgot it.

One of my favourite memories is when he found three abandoned kittens. Although, to the best of my knowledge, he had no history as a cat-person, rather than inform the RSPA he took them home with him where they were totally spoiled for the rest of their lives.

Despite the passage of time, the memories haven't faded. My thoughts are with Mary and Bill's daughter Lynn whilst remembering his daughter Maxine. Lance
