The Brooklyn-based couple, Paula Jeanine and Richard X Bennett, composed the eleven new art songs on Amaryllis 2 which are primarily about love, pain and the natural world although you don't need me to tell you. One listen or even just reading the track titles will suffice.
The Bennetts' roots are many and varied. Paula, as well as her attributes on this album is also a butoh dancer and totally committed to following a creative path which she undoubtedly does here. Richard not only has many jazz and electronica recordings to his name but also has six critically acclaimed raga-based records on Indian labels.
It's not an easy listen despite Paula's wistful voice and Richard's sympathetic accompaniment. However, it's worth persevering with and, with time, a clearer picture emerges from the gloom. An interesting album. Lance
