Difficult for me to equate with what's going on here with all these synths and things making sounds that are barely music let alone jazz. Then, like a break in the clouds, the Fortner that I know and love from his previous album the Grammy-winning Southern Nights, bursts through and normal service is, more or less, resumed. Of course these are fragmentary moments and the electronic effects are never too far away.
I particularly liked the tracks where Fortner switched to the Hammond B3. He gets the powerful sound of a thunderstorm that all the organ greats have in their armory and he unleashes it to great effect. Add the pianist's dexterity and the end product is well worth the means.
There are a lot of good things going on - only the listener will be able to say how many. Play it for six different people and you will most likely get six different answers. A curate's egg. Lance
