The irrepressible David Gray rocked up at Sunderland Minster with his Flextet. This evening's Flextet would comprise trumpeter Pete Tanton, pianist Alan Law, opting to play a keyboard (the venue's acoustic piano given the night off), bassist Paul Grainger and drummer Michael Mather. The venue, the promoter and the musicians were delighted to see a good turn out.
Silver Orcas for starters. The Flextet flexing its collective muscle. Across the course of two sets, DG played 'bone, sang, danced (in a fashion), clearly enjoying the occasion. Cat Bells, It's Possible, DG wasn't afraid to introduce several original compositions. Señor Blues (Horace Silver the composer) featured Gray's vocals, a good one.
DG likes to sing I'll be Seeing You. He did just that here at the Minster. No hiding place, sung sincerely. Neon Lights featured the two vocalists - Pete Tanton singing in English, bandleader Gray singing it to us in German. A man of many talents.
If there was a highlight, Pete Tanton singing Ain't No Sunshine could well have been it. No, it was the highlight. A good night at the Minster. The Old Black Cat Jazz Club is going from strength to strength, long may it continue. Russell
