The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Sunday night @ the Globe: Nel Begley and Paul Edis - August 2

Begley and Edis had spent the weekend tutoring at one of the Jazz Co-op's highly acclaimed workshops. Several of the students from the course made their way to the evening's gig to observe their educators practicing what they'd preached and, judging by the applause and demands for an encore, concluded that it was money well spent.

I last heard heard Begley at the nearby Newcastle Arts Centre in April last year. The voice hadn't changed and nor had the set list which wasn't surprising as she was in effect touring the same album Small Flame. What was surprising was the fact that she still needed the crutch of the lyrics on a music stand. 

However, if the end deserves the means, then so be it.

The end did deserve the means and Nel's distinctive voice filled the room with Leonard Cohen's Lucky to be me; Joãozinho Boa Pinta (sung in Portuguese); A House is not a Home (lyric Hal David); Stuck in the Middle With You (Stealers Wheel); What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?; Small Flame (Begley original) and Cherokee, which ended the first set and had an amazing stride chorus in the middle by Edis. The only other pianist I've heard change modes so seamlessly was Oscar Peterson!

The usual intermission spent socialising - it's nice to have proper conversations rather than texts and things. 

The second set got underway with Robin and Rainger's Easy Living followed by Richard Rodgers' The Sweetest Sounds (written without Hammerstein!); Ain't no Way (Aretha Franklin); Gentle Rain; Woodstock; Social Call then, for an encore, Nature Boy - even a fast 3/4 did nothing for this overrated ditty. although our duo did try.

Nature Boy notwithstanding, it was an enjoyable gig. Begley keeping the scatting to a minimum and Edis now surely the numero uno when it comes to accompaniment - the interplay between voice and piano was mesmeric. Lance
