Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday Night @ the Globe: Jeffrey Hewer Quartet - June 11

Jeffrey Hewer (guitar); Ben Powling (tenor sax); Sam Jackson (bass); Steve Hanley (drums).

A belter! Having heard the band at the Globe a couple of years back I knew it couldn't be anything other than fantastic plus.

I was knocked out THEN and I had to take the ten count again last night.

To start at the bottom end, one of the things that gave this session the edge on the previous one was the improved balance between drum and bass. This time around, I could hear clearly Jackson's bass lines and his solos. He walks the bass, he talks the bass without ever shouting. Why play a zillion notes when one will do? He swings and he's melodic without ever being in your face.

Not that Hanley is a shrinking violet! He's dynamic, driving and always listening to what's happening out front.

The last time the quartet played at the Globe I was on a high coming off gigs and albums by Dave O'Higgins and Keith Loftus and I wondered how Powling would do. He did good! This time, the benchmark was Lewis Watson and Emma Rawicz and, once again, with his big Dexter Gordon sound he not only stayed in the race but won hands down (literally) when it came to nail varnish! I'm going to borrow my wife's, maybe that's what's been holding me back!

As for Hewer, by my reckoning, he compares with any guitarist you care to to name between Blaydon, Belfast, Birmingham, Boston, Baltimore or any town/city in the civilised world (if such a place still exists) and he can occasionally be heard at the Vault in Darlington. Lance
