Not heard this song before but I remember the After Midnight LP when it first came out and recall Juan Tizol playing on some of the tunes. I first heard Willie Smith on a Jimmy Lunceford 78 of Blues In The Night and along with Johnny Hodges were how I wanted to sound when I started on the alto. When Nat King Cole played the Palace theatre he was amazing.
Mike, I too had that Lunceford 78 - I thought I still had it (the 78) but, over the years, it seems to have gone the journey. What I remember though is that it was the best version ever of that tune. The Lunceford band was up there with Ellington and Basie - check out their version of 'For Dancers Only'.
As regards Willie Smith, after Lunceford he went with Harry James before replacing Hodges with Ellington. He had that cutting edge that, stylistically, placed him in between Hodges and Benny Carter.
Another great album is 'Alto Saxes' which has Smith, Hodges and Carter alongside Charlie Parker.
