This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Astrud Gilberto (March 29, 1940 - June 5, 2023)

Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto died yesterday. Although probably best remembered for her recording of The Girl From Ipanema with Stan Getz which helped to popularise the bossa nova, she also had around fifteen albums later released under her own name.

Her soft, laid back vocals were almost as emotionless as the girl in the song which led to its ultimate appeal - the desire for the unattainable, particular when the person in question is tall and tan and young and lovely.


Other numbers associated with her include The Shadow of Your Smile, Dindi, So Nice and One Note Samba. 

Over the years she toured extensively in America and Europe before retiring in 2002 and returning to Bahia where she died on June 5.

Astrud Gilberto was 83.
