Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sue Ferris Quintet @ the Lit & Phil - June 16

(© Patti D)
Sue Ferris (tenor sax); Graham Hardy (trumpet/flugel); Ben Lawrence (piano); Andy Champion (double bass); Rob Walker (drums).

Once again, today's concert was sold out weeks in advance. And why not?!

Five exceptional musicians, individually well known in various other projects, who have obviously wanted to present this one. They loved playing it and we loved listening to it.

Most of the tunes were new to me (and others I guess) and not your Great American Songbook but very very interesting including a tune written by Paul Edis called McCoin a Phrase.

Readers of this blog will know that Paul, a fine musician now living and working in London, initiated these concerts many moons ago and is a mentor to many fine young musicians in the North East and beyond including Ben Lawrence whose piano playing was understated but just perfect. This particular tune by Paul Edis gave Sue and Graham the opportunity for blistering solos. Then a beautiful arrangement by Graham Hardy of One Hand, One Heart from West Side Story gave Andy Champion the opportunity to show why he too is so well regarded by fellow musicians.

A couple of times throughout the set   some really nice things were going on between the bass and drums while the rest of band sat back. (I asked Sue later what it was called when they do that. She said the band had been discussing that very thing but didn’t know what to call it either). Whatever it  was, it was blooming good and very musical, just like the whole concert.

The set included: Sopping the Biscuit (Roy Hargrove); Grove’s Groove (Steve Davis); McCoin a Phrase (Paul Edis); One Hand, One Heart (Bernstein and Sondheim); Miss Hazel (Tina Brooks) and two others whose titles I didn’t catch…help appreciated! Sylvia
