Esk release their debut single, Spirit, on Friday July 21

(Press release): Northern neo-soul duo Esk is vocalist and songwriter Evie Hill, and pianist Ben Lawrence who also produced the session. 

Their compelling debut single Spirit will be released on Friday 21st July, combining the rural soundscapes in which they grew up with the jazz influences they discovered later in life. 

Spirit unites neo-soul with alternative folk, creating a peaceful and uplifting work which defies genre. Esk are heavily influenced by artists such as D’Angelo, Moonchild, and J Dilla. However, the single was written and recorded in Cumbria, allowing the duo to experiment with acoustic elements and live field recordings to create a distinctive sound. The duo’s style is ‘esque’; they capture their influences with a sense of longing and yearning that permeates the music. Evie’s lyrics explore the conflict between fear and desire; Ben’s production combines electronic and acoustic elements which synthesise opposing musical worlds.

With performances at Pizza Express Soho, Newcastle Jazz Cafe, Jazz Cafe Posk, DJAZZ and Durham Cathedral behind them, the duo will be touring their new album throughout 2023 and 24.
