Doug MacDonald (guitar); Mike Flick (bass); Paul Kreibich (drums).
Doug MacDonald doesn't feature in this year's DownBeat Poll but, then again, nor does Pasquale Grasso whom Nigel Price described as the "The greatest jazz guitarist in the world". Nigel didn't make the cut either. As usual, the contenders were Metheny and Frisell who edged out Julian Lage, McLaughlin and Bernstein.
I'm not going to suggest that MacDonald should be toppling Metheny and co but, on the strength of this album, he certainly deserves to be up there in the shake-up.
Apart from the title track and the jazz waltz Hortense, which are MacDonald originals, this is a choice collection of standards, impeccably played that, to use an unfashionable word, swing.
With sound support from Flick and Kreibich who have their own 32 bars of fame this is a sheer delight from three players at the top of their game. Lance
Available from Nov. 16.
PS: MacDonald has had several previous albums reviewed on BSH - check them out.
Days of Wine and Roses; Manhã De Carnaval; Hortense; Dearly Beloved; More Than You Know; Shadow Waltz; They Say it's Wonderful; Brazil; Serenade to Highland Park; Frenesi; You Stepped Out of a Dream.
