#34. A fine achievement in keeping a weekly live stream going for so long, although Jack Cotterill is left trailing somewhat in the wake of Adrian Cox and Emmet Cohen! From his Staffordshire studio, drummer Cotterill has been streaming his Wednesday evening gigs with a regular working unit. This evening we were presented with something a little different.
For one week only, an all-new line-up tipped its collective hat to 'trad', British traditional jazz. Alex Clarke, recently heard at Newcastle's Lit & Phil, and soon to return to the city to play her part in an all-star tribute to Humphrey Lyttelton, sat at one end of what looks like a cramped studio space, Mark Challinor (banjo) and Jim Swinnerton (bass) standing behind her, alongside band leader Cotterill. Clarke blew alto sax, Challinor knocked out the chords on banjo, singing on one or two numbers into the bargain, Swinnerton swung and slapped, and the man swinging it at the kit, Mr Cotterill, made the introductions. From Swanee River to Bourbon Street Parade to an uplifting Let the Light from the Lighthouse Shine on Me, the ad hoc four dispatched the tunes with a bright and breezy efficiency, Cotterill moving things along at pace.
