This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Doc Cheatham with the River City Jazzmen

Back in the early 1980's trumpet legend Doc Cheatham guested with the River City Jazzmen at the Corner House in Heaton which was, at the time, the epicentre of jazz in the north east.

Tidying up in the loft after the chaos of the recent storm  I came across this photo of the gig which shows Stan Martin on tenor and Gordon Solomon on trombone  flanking the great man.

This second photo shows Gordon and Doc trading choruses - as I remember, it was quite a night - Lance

I remember the session well Lance. Bill Brooks was on bass, Alan Palliser on piano and I think either Billy Young or Jackie Denton on drums. We met up with Doc again later at the Breda Festival in Holland and had a lovely night with him. He really was a gentleman, and despite his age could still play in the upper register when required.
