A few years ago I saw the Brian Molley Quartet at the Manchester Jazz Festival and enjoyed their one-hour set. I think the line-up in Manchester was the same as on this album apart from Mario Caribe who was on bass.
Six of the tunes here are written by Molley, plus two standards - A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes and The Trolley Song. The latter tune is taken at a slower tempo than Brubeck's well known version and I must admit I have not heard of the former tune.
The quartet have travelled widely, having performed at the 2015 Rochester International Jazz Festival in New York, during which time they performed at Silvana in Harlem and the WhyNot Jazz Room in Greenwich Village. Glasgow-based Molley has also visited India many times, including a headlining appearance at the Madras Jazz Festival, the quartet collaborating with percussionist Krishna Kishor.
All the tracks are of interest but my favourite, if I had to choose just one, would be Bletchley which made me think of the great Wayne Shorter and his influence on many sax players.
One of those albums that repeated listening enabled me to appreciate the full extent of what the participants are doing.
Recommended to most modern jazz fans. Mike Farmer.
