Our first visit to this year's EFG London Jazz Festival came via livestream from the 606 Club and featured four brilliant saxophonists - the late Peter King deserved nothing less.
Sam Braysher and Nadim Teimoori kicked things off in style with 317 East 32nd St., a Lennie Tristano tune that originally featured Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh. Tonight's duo played it somewhat less cool without losing the flavour. Braysher I knew but Teimoori was an unfamiliar name to me - yet another great tenor player to surface.
Next up Mornington Lockett, no stranger to the 606 and who played an integral part in Peter King's latter years. I didn't catch the tune title but it didn't matter. Once Lockett takes off who cares!
Braysher returned, this time with Alex Clarke who delighted everyone at the Lit and Phil a couple of weeks back and no doubt will do so again next Saturday at the Black Swan. The two altos played Kenny Barron's Voyage - which seems to be the in tune for alto players at the moment - see Mike Farmer's review of Greg Abate's recent CD.
Alex stayed on stage for Taking a Chance on Love which had some Monkish piano from Desch.
Nadim and Mornington did a little jousting before the four horns closed the set and the livestream with Nadim's arrangement of Charlie Parker's Drifting on a Reed. All four slugged it out - no quarter given or taken - magic!
