Rico's Good Friday Popup Louis - April 2

(Screenshot collage by Lance)
Rico Tomasso (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals); Nick Dawson (piano); Denny Ilett (guitar); Spats Langham (guitar, vocals); Martin Wheatley (guitar); Luca Filastro (piano); Nils Solberg (guitar); Martin Litton (piano); Andrew Oliver (piano)

Rico called this week's Popup Louis a 'best of'. In other words, a selection of numbers from a year and more of live streams accompanied by a parade of all star talents. Over Rico's right shoulder, standing on a desk, not his usual bottle or two of beer, rather a 'thirst aid box'. A  wooden construction capable of holding a rack of, say, four, perhaps six, bottles. Nice one! This evening's set list ranged from I Want to be Happy with Rico accompanied by pianist Nick Dawson through to Andrew Oliver accompanying our host on The New Orleans Stomp.

Spats Langham took the first vocal of the evening on I Ain't Got Nobody, Rico getting in on the act with a fine trumpet-vocal rendition of St James' Infirmary, accompanied by our Hawaiian shirt-wearing friend, Mr Martin Wheatley. It became apparent that with no fewer than eight guest accompanists to accommodate, Rico couldn't quite master the multi-tasking aspect of tonight's live stream, on more than one occasion forgetting to switch photos from one guest to the next! Bob Haggart's What's New? featured Rico playing flugelhorn, accompanied by Mr Elegance himself, pianist Martin Litton. Fine playing by both musicians, a set highlight, for sure. To close the evening's session, Rico called up Portland, Oregon based pianist Andrew Oliver. A good, varied set to start the Easter weekend.
