The series also spawned a couple of movies in 1967 and 1989. It's the latter one that I've got on DVD.
Although now in colour it remains firmly entrenched in the 1950s and '60s with Cadillacs 'big enough to have a bowling alley in the back' and guys all smoking and wearing fedora hats.
Pearl Bailey is cast as a bar owner but doesn't sing. Barbara Williamson, Gunn's girlfriend Evie does sing but, presumably, the voice was dubbed. Lots of band shots but no names given.
Plenty of violence with Gunn (Peter Strauss) punching well above his weight. Guys get shot every few minutes and our hero is frequently up to his knees in dead bodies as well as being surrounded by very much alive female bodies!
A quote from the DVD box: An ex cop turned private eye who's caught in the middle of a dangerous gang war. But to Gunn, dealing with the heat is a lot like jazz. It makes more sense if you play it cool.

I haven't seen the movie, and I can't really remember the tv programme - but I do recall the great music! Duane Eddy did a recording of it as well.
