This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. It's Monk Saturday (April 3)

Today's edition of J to Z (Saturday, 5:00pm, Radio 3) includes pianist Jason Moran choosing some of the music that inspires him, not least the compositions of Thelonious Monk. Later, at eight o'clock, Kansas Smitty's, online (Facebook and YouTube) will be playing Monk's Underground album. BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year Deschanel Gordon has been charged with the task of doing justice to Monk. Our man will rise to the occasion, no two ways about it! Alec Harper assumes the role of Charlie Rouse, Will Sach as Larry Gales, Will Cleasby steps into the shoes of Ben Riley and Ella Honen-Ford sings Jon Hendricks.
