Bebop Spoken There

Steve Coleman: ''If you don't keep learning, your mind slows down. Use it or lose it''. (DownBeat, January 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ella Hohnen-Ford live streaming with Joe Webb. April 4

Ella Hohnen-Ford made a big impression on Kansas Smitty's Thelonious Monk session. Less than twenty four hours later, Ms Hohnen-Ford popped up on YouTube working with Kansas Smitty's regular, pianist Joe Webb. On the evidence of these performances the recent Royal Academy of Music graduate is an exceptional talent.

You're Sensational sang Hohnen-Ford. Wow! Hohnen-Ford couldn't be that good, could she? Let's listen to the next one...Some People (from Gypsy). Wow! Much of Ms Hohnen-Ford's set list would draw upon stage and screen musicals together with numbers written by the likes of Randy Newman and Tom Waits.

Hohnen-Ford's vocal style is one part measured, one part dynamic, playful, risk-taking scat. All in all, quite remarkable. Having Joe Webb in your corner is a bonus, what a piano player! Their take on Undecided put it up there, a match for anyone who has interpreted the song. Make 'Em Laugh (Donald O'Connor in Singin' in the Rain) offered yet more evidence that Hohnen-Ford is a star in the making. To close an eye-opening set, Will Sach, Kansas Smitty's ace bass player, joined Ella (what's in a name, eh?!) and Joe on Jerome Kern's In Love in Vain. Here's a prediction, Ella Hohnen-Ford is destined for the big time.
