The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Isaiah Collier & the Chosen Few live streaming from Small's - Mar. 25

Something a little different this evening from West 10th Street. Isaiah Collier is a new name to BSH, as are the/his 'Chosen Few'. The 'Chosen' on this gig, presumably regular associates, were bassist Jeremiah Hunt and drummer Michael Ode. Much of their set came from the outside, on occasion swinging in, thanks to Michael Ode's impressive drumming. 

Collier, in a white overcoat recalling Lester Bowie's lab coat, possesses a huge sound. It would have been good to have been in Small's basement space to experience it up close. For now, the live stream is the only option. Small's audio-visual presentation isn't the best, but hey, there is something endearing about what amounts to a DIY venture, a venture which has been documenting every performance - 17000 and counting - at the Greenwich Village venue since 2007. Oh, to be there in person...one day, one day. Russell.
