This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Public Radio Music Day - Thursday April 16.


Thursday, April 16 is Public Radio Music Day. To celebrate, WBGO’s host Simon Rentner and the pianist Greg Spero will host a live taping/virtual studio session of The Checkout featuring special guests “zooming in” from around the world.  

The duo invites special guest artists to hang (and sometimes perform) including GroundUP’s vocalist Sirintip, Snarky Puppy’s Michael League, trumpeter Marquis Hill, and the drummer Makaya McCraven. 


Spero, who spent a large portion of last year on the road with Makaya McCraven, will perform solo -- selections off his forthcoming recording from his band Spirit Fingers coming on Ropeadope called PEACE.  

The webcast will begin this Thursday at 11am EST (4:00pn BST) on The Checkout’s and WBGO’s Facebook channels, and will be released on a future Checkout podcast episode.  In our current age of quarantine, Spero is hosting daily live streaming performances entitled “Mornings With Greg!!!" at 8am PST from his home in Los Angeles.
