Surely the most difficult musical task is to sing unaccompanied. Alone, without guitar or keyboard to keep you on track, it can be so easy for intonation to aft gang agley as R.Burns* once said.
Lindsay Hannon has no such worries - every note she hits is pitch perfect even when singing some low down dirty blues she's in tune apart from when the song demands that she isn't.
Tonight her subject was death - a subject we're very familiar with these days although it has been a vital part of music since time immemorial. A grand opera wouldn't be a grand opera if the hero or heroine didn't pop their clogs in the final scene.
This wasn't grand opera but it was grand singing in any genre.
Travellin' Shoes, one of two Bessie Jones' numbers opened the stream, preceded by a slurp of a potion from the Allendale Brewery. If you're going to sing the blues you've got to live the blues although it has to be said that Lindsay's pad and the Allendale booze looks to be infinitely preferable to drinking muddy water and sleeping in a hollow log.
Another Man Done Gone. I can't comment too much on this one as Facebook had done gone spasmodically into freeze mood. The unfrozen parts sounded good.
More Bessie Jones with Death Have Mercy. I must admit that, prior to Lindsay, I was unfamiliar with Bessie Jones. Lindsay drawing attention to the gospel/folk singer who died in 1984 prompts me to investigate further.
Drown in my Own Tears - Janis Joplin. Some might query Lindsay's statement that Joplin never had a band that gave her the backing she needed. Others might wonder if any band could. Nevertheless, Lindsay did the job with just her own ukulele for backing - our gal don't need no holding company!
Lindsay's back next week at the same time (7:15pm) with more beer and blues.

*Robbie Burns, the Scottish poet and not to be confused with local bluesman Ray Burns although he too may have made a similar remark and both men often appear to have shared the same tailor.
