The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Enrico Tomasso: Live Stream - April 11

There I was having a flagon of London Pride and, guess what, Enrico was having the same brew! I raised my glass and clinked it against the screen without doing any harm - apart from to my liver.

This evening's session began with Someday You'll be Sorry with Rico giving a brief example of how Bix and Louis would have approached the song. From an undisclosed location, somewhere in England, Martin Wheatley brought his banjo to the ball and provided the foundation for I Ain't Got Nobody. The banjo was played at an acceptable volume - pianissimo - and it sounded good.


A visit to the Louis Armstrong Museum in the Queens' district of NYC* gave our man, in between slurping Pride and talking about mouthpieces and things, of how he got to play four of Louis' actual trumpets. This eventually led to a tune neither of us were familiar with - Was I to Blame for Falling in Love With You? It's a lovely tune (Martin was now on the more respectable guitar) and even the vocal didn't harm it too much. I often wonder why trumpet players (and pianists) feel the need to sing. You don't get Tony Bennett playing the trumpet or Elvis playing the guitar (yes, I know he did but he shouldn't have unless he had Barney Kessel round to help him out with the hard bits). Having said that, Enrico does it as good as any of them.

An Armstrong related big band number from the 1930's - Cuban Pete - brought this entertaining vignette to a close. One thing was obvious, he has, to speak in the trumpet player's vernacular, got his lip back in!

You know something, I'm starting to enjoy these streaming sessions so much that I may never go out again. Spontaneous music, cheap beer and social distancing voided thanks to emails, texts and what have you. I could become a recluse - no chance! At the end of the day if I, and the world, survive, I'll be at the head of the queue when the first gig is announced and the other two will just have to wait in line!
