Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Mick Shoulder Quintet @ the Black Bull, Blaydon - Nov. 18

Tomorrow (Sunday) all roads lead to the Black Bull, Blaydon (NE21 4JJ postcode for Sat Nav users) as bassist Mick Shoulder brings in his first-rate quintet to play two sets of rip-roaring bebop.

Earlier this year Bebop Spoken Here caught the band in Bishop Auckland. What a set that was! The frontline of Graham Hardy (trumpet and flugelhorn) and tenor sax master Lewis Watson tore the place apart. The rhythm section - Shoulder, pianist Dean Stockdale and drummer Russ Morgan - is a pay-your-money gig in itself, put the five of them together and you've got yourself a contender for Gig of the Year.

Art Blakey, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter - are you salivating at the prospect? You should be! Tenor man Lewis Watson isn't heard often enough these days and tomorrow's gig is a rare opportunity to catch up with one of the finest.

It's a fiver on the door (a fiver, what a bargain!) with the first set starting at 8:00pm prompt. Travelling from Newcastle? Right, leave the car at home, take the bus from Eldon Square Bus Station (nos. 12/12A at quarter to and quarter past the hour) and twenty minutes later you'll arrive at Blaydon Bus Station. The Black Bull is four, maybe five, minutes' walk. Treat yourself to a pint of Black Sheep and settle down for a night of stupendous jazz. Oh, yes, the ultra-reliable (and fast) return journey departs 10:55, arriving Newcastle 11:08. Telly switched-off, coat on, Blaydon here you come!
