This concert had sold out weeks ago
as the Lit and Phil regular concert attendees were joined by the many Zoe
Rahman admirers. Unusually for a jazz gig, we were given a programme with
various biographical details of the artist and also the list of songs that
would be performed.
After the first medley of tunes had been
played, she asked for a programme so she could see what was she was meant to
have played; not surprisingly for a great improviser, this bore little
resemblance to the advertised list.
I have seen Zoe Rahman several times
over the years and I can honestly say I have never heard her play better. Zoe
Rahman is a really engaging performer who connects with her audience
immediately. The music just flowed and flowed from one style to another:
classical, contemporary, free, Bengali and swing all dovetailed perfectly to
enthral the impeccably quiet audience who only made their presence felt when
they burst into loud applause at each break in proceedings.
After one hour the music had to stop,
although we were treated to a single encore before the piano lid was finally
closed. I could have happily rewound to the start and heard the whole thing
again.
