Paul Taylor (solo piano)
Taylor produces a unique mixture of musical influences and his own inventiveness through his improvised performances. Here, he was highly dynamic throughout – with many lyrical moments mixed along the way with influences from the likes of Debussy, Chopin, Keith Jarrett plus some occasional whimsical motifs of his own.There were also occasional hints of minimalism subtlety lurking in the constantly developing themes.
Overall, the main components were Taylor’s flowing lyricism and harmony along this meandering and seamless soundscape. It was a delight hearing the Kawai grand in an uninterrupted 45 minute improvised performance making good use of the acoustic grand at the Lit & Phil. The room was full, the audience totally attentive throughout, captivated by, and wholly appreciative of Taylor’s solo performance.
