Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Binker & Moses @ GCT

(Preview by Russell/photo from GIJF).
This Thursday, 12 October, a coup will take place at Gosforth Civic Theatre (GCT). The hot ticket at this year’s Gateshead International Jazz Festival featured Binker Golding and Moses Boyd. An electric atmosphere inspired a committed performance from the Londoners. Six months on Binker and Moses are to play a gig in the Newcastle suburb of Gosforth!
GCT, once known as Gosforth Civic Hall, has an impressive jazz history…Jay McShann, Tal Farlow, Buddy Tate and Red Norvo just some of the legendary names to have graced the venue. Now under new ownership, the Regent Farm Road venue has recently established a ‘jazz club’ session. Presently a bi-monthly event, the inaugural gig featured the Paul Edis Sextet, master guitarist Mark Williams brought in his trio, and now Binker and Moses. Tenor saxophone (Binker Golding) and drums (Moses Boyd) can be an exhilarating combination – and this Gosforth gig will undoubtedly be an almighty, incendiary occasion. MOBO award winners, Jazz FM 2016 award winners (Breakthrough Act of the Year and Best UK Jazz Act) resulted in yet more media interest and now, in autumn 2017, they’re touring in Britain and across Europe having already played the Rochester Jazz Festival, New York.

John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Sonny Rollins…the comparisons have been written about. Hear the duo live and make up your own mind. Binker and Moses' debut album Dem Ones recorded October 9th, 2014 is available on Gearbox Records www.gearboxrecords.com Binker and Moses' second album is out now. Journey to the Mountain of Forever features guest artists including Evan Parker, Byron Wallen and Sarathy Korwar.

Tyneside trio Archipelago – Faye MacCalman, reeds, John Pope, bass, Christian Alderson, drums – have bagged the support slot at GCT. A recently released debut album, Archipelago are on a roll. Doors at Gosforth Civic Theatre open at 7:30pm, admission £7.00.
