This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) The Cookers: USA Bop Masters to play Sage Gateshead!!!

The Cookers, America’s ambassadors of bop, are heading back to Sage Gateshead!!! The 2015 Gateshead International Jazz Festival presented America’s finest interpreters of bop in an unforgettable concert. The legendary rhythm section of George Cables, piano, Cecil McBee, double bass, and Billy Hart, drums – a dream gig in itself! – powered an amazing frontline of Billy Harper, tenor saxophone, Jaleel Shaw, alto saxophone, and two hot shot trumpeters – Eddie Henderson and David Weiss.
Veterans of literally thousands of recording dates, the band returns to Sage Gateshead one week tonight, that’s Monday 14 November. Since the band’s previous appearance at Sage Gateshead two changes to the line-up have been made without any diminution in the star-studded status of one of America’s finest exponents of the hard bop idiom. Read on to get the low down from bandleader David Weiss. The Cookers are currently in Europe and the band is heading to the UK to play four dates.
