Bob Cranshaw, one of the acknowledged masters of both bass and bass guitar passed away on Wednesday (November 2) age 83. Possibly best known for his playing on Sonny Rollins' The Bridge, Cranshaw recorded many other albums with Rollins as well as with Blue Note artists such as Dexter Gordon and Lee Morgan.I don't think I ever got to see him live - You always remember the horns, the piano and the drums but rarely the bass player (unless you're a bass player). This is unfair as has been said many times, the bass player is the lynchpin to the whole shebang.
Time to dig out Lee Morgan's The Sidewinder...
