This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. RIP Buster Cooper.

Buster Cooper, one of the last of the great Ellingtonians passed away on Friday, May 13. The trombonist was with Duke for most of the 1960s appearing with the band at Newcastle City Hall on at least two occasions (1965/67). Like all of Ellington's soloists, he had a very distinctive style that varied from boisterous humour to romantic lyricism. Prior to joining Ellington, Cooper had a spell with Lionel Hampton and in later years with the Frankie Capp Juggernaut. Although 87 when he passed away he was still gigging up to February this year.

Very sad news indeed. Saw him at the City Hall weth the Duke in the late 70's. Always did enjoy his playing, and was having a listen to The Symphonic Ellington on the Reprise label that he solo's on before I did read your post. And as you said, one of the last of the great Ellington sidemen. R.I.P
