Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

A rare chance to experience the world class acoustics of Hall Two in an intimate in the round setting with Scandinavian/British jazz trio Phronesis.

‘Life to Everything’ is the title of Phronesis’ forthcoming album, recorded live at last year’s EFG London Jazz Festival, and they kick off a national tour this month to support it, including a date at Sage Gateshead on 27 May.
This will be a unique opportunity to experience this exciting, fast rising trio up close and personal, as we will be presenting this performance in the round. Get a unique perspective on Hall Two’s intimate surroundings with a 360º view of the band.
Bassist Jasper Høiby leads a stunning trio that represents everything that’s exciting about live jazz - The Telegraph called them “the most electrifying experience to be had in British jazz” and Jazzwise called them the most exciting and imaginative piano trio since EST.”
With so much time spent on the road and a reputation for spellbinding live performances, it was only natural for the band to record their fifth album in front of a live audience. In Høiby’s words “performing live has been the strength of this trio from the start. As the album title suggests - it’s where everything comes to life.”
Phronesis perform at Sage Gateshead on May 27, 2014. Tickets are £13.50 (concessions available) and can be booked either by calling 0191 443 4661, online at
www.sagegateshead.com or in person from Sage Gateshead’s Ticket Office.
