Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Djangologie @ The Cherry Tree

James Birkett, Giles Strong (guitar); Emma Fisk (violin); Mick Shoulder (bass).
The music was superb, as we've come to expect from Djangologie and, of course, so was the food.  Crab spring rolls, Asian salad and wasabi créme fraiche tastes like manna - especially when accompanied by Les Hot Clubbers playing Coquette.
Could life get any better?
It certainly could! Chargrilled rump steak (medium rare), peppercorn butter, traditional garnish et les frites and a set of tunes equally piquant. Shangri-la has moved to 9 Osborne Rd.
I can't list the tunes, the vagaries of the Cherry Tree sound system meant Monsieur Shoulder's announcements were mainly inaudible. He has promised me a set list which will be added later.
Still, what's in a name? Most Hot Club tunes (like bebop numbers) I can sing/hum note for note but putting a name to them is a totally different matter!
The band were on fire. Emma Fisk, James Birkett, Giles Strong and Mick Shoulder played as if they'd spent their whole lives in Paris, Toulouse, Marseilles alongside le chef - if Marie Antoinette had tasted his Toffee apple choux bun, vanilla Chantilly with warm salt caramel sauce before Madame Guillotine took her out she'd have died happy.
If Djangologie had been doing the gig Marie A would have thought she was already in heaven!
Lance.
