Hannabiell & Midnight Blue present: Retro - 3rd Annual Halloween Party

8pm on Friday 25th October 2013; Reds Bar (Northumbria University)
Tickets £6 advance /£8 on the door
Hannabiell & Midnight Blue are back with their annual sell-out Halloween spectacular, with guests invited to get creative and dress retro style with prizes for the best dressed!. Never ones to disappoint, the dynamic ensemble are presenting an evening to be remembered including a stellar line-up which showcases both the North East’s most established and emerging talent; Celebrating the independent artists who populate the City’s vibrant scene and invigorating it further by encouraging musical collaborations.
Not only will party-goers have the pleasure of enjoying Hannabiell & Midnight Blue’s signature, high energy Afro-Psychedelic Funk Style, this event will also see an exciting collaboration between the band and Geordie brass dance band The Baghdaddies. The Baghdaddies are one of the North East’s most cherished bands, best known for their infectious Balkan style, middle-eastern rhythms and influences from ska, jazz, punk and
metal delivered with theatre and exuberance. And if you thought it couldn’t get any better, DJ Tim Shaw from Triptik Records will be on hand to further entertain the audience, bringing a unique and uplifting mix of percussive latin, funk, soul and house to make people move.
“Our annual Halloween Double Bill is a platform in which Hannabiell & Midnight Blue practice what we preach, which is a passion for playing music and creating a scene that aid in breaking down cultural barriers. This is our third annual double bill, which fall during Black History month, where we collaborate with musicians who would otherwise not share the same bill/stage. Midnight Blue has a diverse membership, which is also reflected in its diverse and intergenerational fan base. The double bills are spaces where the fans from both ensembles come together to celebrate the rich and diverse musical cultures here in the North East. This year Hannabiell will take the show one step further with a joint encore not to be missed!” Hannabiell Sanders
Hannabiell & Midnight Blue fuse together Afro-Caribbean & Latin percussion, Jazz, Afrobeat, Funk, and Reggae to create their unique sound. It has been described by London based vintage afro-vinyl collector Volta 45 as "Afro-psychedelic funk". The music created from this fusion is an organic blend of powerful and upbeat drums, brass, vocal chants, and mbira compositions which not only produces an invigorating party atmosphere, it also summons audience participation. Since arriving to the UK, they have created a buzz in the North East of England performing at venues such as the Sage Gateshead, The Journal Tyne Theater, The Cluny, The Queens Hall Art Center in Hexham, Northern Stage, Star & Shadow Cinema, Live Theatre and many more. They have also performed at other venues nationally like Livebox at the Hare & Hound-Birmingham, Jazz Refreshed-London, The Hagglers Corner-Sheffield and Durham: Brass International Festival.
The Baghdaddies have been touring the world for 14 years, with a strong repertoire of world music with strong Balkan tendencies alongside Caribbean grooves, Middle Eastern rhythms and even some Geordie [native Newcastle] touches, all awash with influences such as ska, jazz, punk and metal, delivered with theatre and exuberance. Uplifting and infectiously danceable, full of blistering brass, rousing 5 part vocal harmonies and a rhythm section that you can’t keep still to. Songs to listen to and party! The Baghdaddies perform at festivals and venues all over the world, they also perform street shows and can also change their instrumentation to roam and process in a Roma Brass band style with marching drum, sousaphone, trombone, sax and trumpet.
