This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review:Esben Brandt Kvartet - Silence and Sound.

Like so much Nordic jazz, this CD is a deep, dark probing affair. Only occasionally is there a glimmer of light or jollity - intensity is the keyword here. Having said that, the album is not without charm. How could it be otherwise with such a talented group of players?
Esben released the album to coincide with his graduation as a Master of Music from the Royal Academy of Music in Denmark, Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sibelius Academy in Finland and the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen. However, it all began at the Berklee affiliated Newpark Music Centre in Dublin where he studied for four years graduating with honours.
With such a pedigree behind him, apart from his not inconsiderable skills as a guitarist, it is little surprise that he has immense arranging and compositional skills which are well displayed throughout.
Another giant is Swedish saxophonist Ljungkvist who is in there at the epicentre of the storm when the elements collide. He slugs it out, trading blows with Joaniquet. The pet shop may not be on fire but the central heating is on max.
A disc that shows that beauty and aggression can live side by side.
