Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

This Wednesday - Beverley Beirne Quartet at The Lit and Phil September 25, 7:30pm

Just a few of the plaudits for Beverley Beirne who's on at the Lit and Phil on Wednesday.
'Finger Clicking Good! My obsession of the week.' Jenny Eels, BBC Introducing  Beverley Beirne.
Beirne is a jazz singer fast becoming known as much for her ability to innovate as for her stunning voice. A truly gifted interpreter, she sings a captivating mix of beautifully arranged standards and exciting interpretations from other genres. 'Beverley's arrangements of well known songs like 'Walk On By' make them her own. She has a wonderful feeling for interpreting numbers into a jazz context yet still keeping the original feel of the song.' UKJazzRadio
Beverley is becoming a regular at music festivals and clubs all over the country.  She is due to play at The Lit and Phil in Newcastle, The Callander Jazz Festival in Scotland, The Marsden Jazz Festival in Huddersfield and has secured a gig with The Pheasantry - one of London's most popular clubs owned by Pizza Express.  'For those of you who haven't been fortunate enough to see her yet we would advise you snap up your tickets.  For this is a woman who just oozes enthusiasm for her work and she is preparing to give 100 per cent during all her performances.' Pickled Egg
'...Beirne possesses a broad, warm lower register and her boldly held sustained notes have something of Nina Simone about them...' Jazz Journal
'A great voice with depth and true jazz interpretation.' UK Jazz Radio
Beverley brings her regular trio of: Graham Hearn – Piano; Ian Mann – Bass; Ronnie Bottomley – Drums
Tickets are available in advance £10 (£8 cons) from the Lit and Phil – 0191 232 0192
