This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Tom Goehring - A Reflected Journey

Tom Goehring (Trumpet /Flugelhorn); Roger Rosenberg (Baritone/soprano saxophones and Bass Clarinet); Dave Leonhardt (Piano); Paul Wells  (Drums); Matt Parish (Bass tracks 1,2,3,5,7,8); Roy Cumming (Bass tracks 4,6,9)

This album is classic post bebop modern jazz. The first four tracks are all penned by Goehring. Kicking off with the title track there is superb work on the bass clarinet by Rosenberg.  This is followed by For Beverly dedicated to Goehring’s sister-in-law a 9/11 victim. Clarion Call is a more up-tempo number which contains a great rasping drum solo from Wells. 
The final original The Walkdown has a great soprano solo and ends with some fine keyboard work from Leonhardt. The rest of the album are all standards paying homage to Goehring's musical heroes. Bossa Nova Ova by Thad Jones followed by the only song played by just the quartet Old Folks (Brel/Shulman) Homage is played to Dizzy with Con Alma and then Grazing in the Grass a tune made famous by Hugh Masakela and to be honest this version adds little value to the great South African’s version. The album concludes with Namely You(Mercer/De Paul) containing yet another splendid bass clarinet solo and a very good bass solo from Cumming.
When listening to this album the animals in the pet shop can remain nice and calm since there is no danger of this music setting anything on fire. However, this is a quality quintet playing quality jazz taking one on a most pleasant and enjoyable journey.
