This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) CD Review - Lacuna: Talk on the Step

This is delightful! Messore writes music that is meaningful by which I mean music that means something to the listener. Melodies that are identifiable as such and he plays them beautifully - well he would wouldn't he? You don't invent a game to get beat at it!
Having said that, Waterman and Goodall's contributions along with bass and drums are of equal importance so maybe a score draw all round with the leader getting the nod on the strength of his compositions.
How to define it? This is where Blue Note 1950's would be today if Blue Note today was where Blue Note 1950's would have been if they'd - aw forget it you know what I mean!
Released on the Babel label on May 27 it is a gem and a worthy addition to that label which, on these shores, is rapidly becoming the UK's Real Blue Note.
The fire here isn't in the Pet Shop,  it's in the long gone haunts of 52nd St but it's also in the jazz clubs of today it's in Ronnies, Birdland, the Village Vanguard and our own gone, but not forgotten, Jazz Café. These 5 guys incorporate the history of modern jazz with the present and, hopefully lay out a blueprint for the future.
