Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Katherine Stone and her Trio – Exchange Café, Queens Hall, Hexham Jazz Club November 8.

Katherine Stone (vcl) Dean Stockdale (pno) Steve Doyle (drums) Dion Krishnan (bgtr)
(Review by John T.)
First visit to this venue with a nice French cafe style setting. Man of the match was substitute Dion  Krishna in for normal bass player Mick Danby who had a shoulder injury. I noticed that Dean Stockdale plays a red “Nord” piano, identical to the house piano at Hoochie and the one that Caro Emerald’s piano man uses
One word that says it all for this band – SOPHISTICATED! Katherine informed me it was only their fourth gig since they were formed six months ago. What a pad they have got together. Two great sets, each number perfectly polished:.
Sway, Cheek to Cheek, My Heart Belongs to Daddy, Night and Day, I Wish You Love, Misty, Wade in the Water Hit the Road to Dreamland, The Way You Look Tonight, Falling in Love Again, Ain't Misbehavin’, That Old Black Magic.
Besame Mucho, Spooky, Dindi, Route 66, S’Wonderful, Squeeze me, Sunny, I Get a Kick Out of You, You are so Beautiful, Love me or Leave me, Agua de Beba, I Wish I Knew (TV Film theme)
Club organizer Hazel Hanley travels down all the way from Alston to run the gig. Hazel played double bass with some of the other club regulars in a quick jam during the interval. At £3 entry I just hope the main band got their BFH – bus fair (petrol money) home
Dion Krishnan has a gig with Anna Reay at La Bodega Morpeth on November 29. More details later
