Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Jan Garbarek/Egberto Gismonti/Charlie Haden - Magico: Carta de Amor.

Jan Garbarek (ten/sop);Egberto Gismonti (gtrs/pno); Charlie Haden (bs).
(Review by Lance)
A previously unreleased double album recorded live at Munich's Amerika Haus in 1981 by the above trio of contrasting stylists. Norwegian saxophonist Garbarek, rich toned, melodic, economical and yet adventurous reaching into the unknown. Brazilian guitarist Gismonti, multi faceted, not content to coast or follow tradition, he searches, fusing classical guitar modes with, jazz - even a hint of punk. Charlie Haden - a legendary bassist, composer, leader and innovator together they form a unique trio.
Each contributes original compositions. Gismonti pitches in with five each one bearing witness to his Brazilian roots. Garbarek brings the dark moods of Norwegian Folk Music. Haden's contribution draws from Liberation Orchestra's repertoire - La Passionera; dedicated to Spanish activist Dolores Ibarruri. His other piece; All That is Beautiful is heard on disc for the first time.
Chamber music yet far removed from the salon. It's the heat of the Brazilian Rain Forest, the tidal current of a Norwegian Fjord, a protest rally in downtown LA.
It's an album that is sometimes dark and sombre, yet also displays joy and freedom. It can induce somnambulism - then make you wake up and dance a dance you never dreamed existed.
The London Jazz Festival features Jan Garbarek on November 13 and Egberto Gismonti on November 16. Both concerts are at the Southbank Centre.
Jan Garbarek/Egberto Gismonti/Charlie Haden - Magico: Carta de Amor. was released on November 5 on ECM 2789004.
