First, a disclaimer. The fact that all three, according to the blurb, is a 'Crazy Cat Lady' has done nothing to colour my judgement of this terrific album. Well maybe just a little bit...
No, even without our mutual feline fondness, this is the most swinging trio album that I've heard since the passing of those cats Peterson, Garner and Evans. They met as part of the Diva Jazz Orchestra back in 2014 at a gig in Cleveland, Ohio, and immediately gelled.
Warren has technique to spare and she uses it accordingly. If the planets had been conveniently aligned I'd have loved to have heard her on Marian McPartland's famed Piano Jazz radio programme. As it was it didn't happen.
You may think that Bill Evans recorded the definitive version of Some Other Time and maybe he did but put the two versions together in a blindfold test and it could go either way.
Shook sets her stall out early on I Only Have Eyes For You. The full sonorous sound that only the very best bass players can produce is magical.
Maricle can kick ass, she can lay back and she does both. This is a trio that will surely rank alongside any trio in jazz past, present and future. They're just purrfect! Lance
