This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Livestream: Alex Clarke Quartet @ the Globe - Jan. 8

I missed the actual performance due to a combination of the various preventative elements that Russell mentioned in his review and my own attacks of mucho coughing and sneezing that would that would have cleared the room faster than a banjo solo.

Fortunately, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, I've been able to watch it via livestream. Having said that, there were one or two hiccups in the control box - I understand there were similar problems down, or rather above Cornwall and the ill-fated rocket launch although I don't think the two were related.

Nevertheless, once this band got into orbit it was all systems go. 

Clarke has a great sound on both horns and I guarantee that, in an American blindfold test there would be some wild guesses! In the UK I think most knowing coves would get it in one! 

Always good to hear Newton, Owston and Tracey either individually or as a trio and this gig showed them off to perfection.

My first gig of 2023 and who's to say it won't be in with a shout on New Year's Eve? Lance
