The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

(Press release): Jazz North East at The Globe presents…

Luís Vicente, Olie Brice, & Mark Sanders

This Sunday Jazz North East are delighted to present Portugese trumpeter Luís Vicente alongside two of the UK’s finest improvisers Olie Brice on double bass and Mark Sanders on drums and percussion.

The Vicente / Brice / Sanders trio got together the first time in 2018 performing in Newcastle for Jazz North East at The Bridge Hotel.

The trio have since toured on a number of occasions and recorded the album "Unnavigable Tributaries" which was highly acclaimed by the critics.

Vicente / Brice / Sanders return to the UK once more for touring and recording, this is European free jazz of the highest quality, an absolutely brilliant way for Jazz North East to kick start their 2023 programme, dont miss it!

Very limited tickets still available online.

Portuguese trumpeter Luís Vicente is one of the most exciting voices to have emerged on his instrument in recent years, increasingly in demand throughout mainland Europe for an approach which combines completely free improvisation with a rich tone and a melodicism reminiscent of the finest players of the past.

Its not just that Vicente is a superb player, clearly aware of past masters on his instrument (Don Cherry seems a particular touchstone, although Lee Morgan, Miles Davis, and many others have been absorbed into the mix), and applying this knowledge in deeply felt free improvisations. Its also that his empathy with his fellow musicians is of the highest order” - Jazz Alert
