Manchester's Beats and Pieces are probably the most adventurous large ensemble in the UK today given their refusal to adhere to the conventional big band format although when they do, such as on (blues for) linu, they can swing with the best of them.
However, although this is no dance band the frequent changes of tempo and the frenzied ensembles that alternate with the more delicate moments conjure up images of a contemporary improvising ballet company reacting to the music. It would present a challenge to the dancers that could either be a terpsichorean triumph or a dance disaster and even if it did go pear-shaped the music would survive.
Without any suggestion of plagiarism the shadows of Mingus, Gil Evans, Charlie Haden and Mike Westbrook hover over much of the music but with an element of post-rock dispelling any nostalgic overtones.
It's quite wonderful. Lance
