This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. The Globe Xmas Party @ The Globe, Newcastle - Dec. 18

Blue Jazz Quartet with Rivkala: Karen Rann (soprano sax); Mark Squires (piano), Dave  Parker (double bass); Michael Howard (drums); Rivkala (vocals)

A flying visit to Newcastle Jazz Co-op's HQ on Railway Street to hear Rivkala. The annual 'do' got off to a slow start, perhaps some were busy toasting Lionel Messi's World Cup success. As the Blue Jazz Quartet took to the stage the place began to fill up nicely. 

Rivkala is a new face on the Tyneside jazz scene and this was BSH's first opportunity to catch up with her. Standards - Love Me or Leave Me, How High the Moon - revealed Rivkala to be a distinctive, expressive voice with, perhaps, a hint of Amy Winehouse. 

The band - Karen Rann, soprano sax, Mark Squires, piano, Dave Parker, double bass, Michael Howard, drums - a steady working unit, played a supporting role, Rivkala the main attraction. The BJ4 and Rivkala went out on Feeling Good. Russell
