This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Christmas Morning Live with Claire Martin & Jim Mullen (Radio 3)

Christmas Day began at 9:00am with Petroc Trelawny's Christmas Morning Live. The BBC Radio 3 presenter's studio guests included Claire Martin and Jim Mullen. Award winners both, Claire and Jim chatted with Petroc in between playing some classy, if not seasonal, jazz numbers. Frank Loesser's What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? followed by Johnny Mandel's Close Enough for Love, both beautifully played, the duo's partnership going back some two, maybe three decades.

Half an hour or so later, Claire and Jim returned with Pure Imagination (Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley) from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Claire has just recorded a new album of songs written by Richard Rodney Bennett and Petroc remembered Claire's former musical partner, who died ten year's ago yesterday, with a recording of Bennett's Let's Go Live in the Country. Our duo signed off with Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas from Judy Garland's movie Meet Me in St Louis. Listen to the entire programme at anytime for the next 29 days.
