The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Fionna Duncan (Nov. 5, 1939- Dec. 6, 2022)

Sad to learn of the passing of Scottish jazz singer Fionna Duncan.

I first heard her in the late 1950s at Newcastle City Hall with the Clyde Valley Stompers. Although she must have still been in her teens I recall her singing with a maturity that belied her youth.

Amazingly, it was over 20 years later when I next heard her. This was at the 1981 Edinburgh Jazz Festival appearing with a variety of bands. I was even more impressed. Age hadn't withered nor custom staled the infinite variety of Fionna's magic.

Sad news. Fiona came to Blaydon a couple of times back in the 1980s, with partner bassist Ronnie Rae. They stayed with us. Both lovely warm and sincere people.
