Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jake Leg Jug Band @ Darlington New Orleans Jazz Club - Dec. 3

Good time jazz, all six musicians accomplished instrumentalists, all contributing vocals, either up front or as backing vocalists, polished repartee, the Jake Leg Jug Band seemingly has a winning formula. Half a dozen albums (CD and vinyl) on sale on the day, give-away pin badges, St Augustine's regulars were in for a good time. Two sets, a mix of material, ranging from Fats Waller, Washboard Sam and hokum nonsense to blues, skiffle chart hits, gospel and a standard or two, effectively, something for everyone.

Singing bassist Duncan Wilcox led the sextet with good humour, his sidemen and women more than happy to play their respective parts. Bryony Rose offered vocal contrast with her country-style delivery, Warren James the Lonnie Donegan skiffle man, the all-action Liam Ward providing the afternoon's highlight singing an impassioned St James' Infirmary

The Jake Leg's recent recruit, Alex Clarke*, slotted in nicely, tenor sax and clarinet (a couple of numbers on washboard!), no big solos, on this occasion a dependable, versatile team player. Guitarist Neil Hulse did the necessary at one end of the stage, banjoist James likewise from the other side. If good time jazz is your thing, check out the Jake Leg Jug Band.

Alex Clarke leads her own quartet - Dave Newton, James Owston, Clark Tracey - at Newcastle Jazz Co-op's Globe HQ on Tuesday 10 January.
