This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Single review: Jake Aaron - Elvis Has Left the Building

Jake Aaron (acoustic guitar); John Etheridge (electric guitar); Steve Waterman (trumpet); Karen Sharp  (tenor sax); Steve Lodder (Hammond);  Davide Mantovani (bass); Marc Parnell (drums).

I don't normally bother with singles but the title intrigued me. Elvis Has Left the Building - a catchphrase often used as an escape route - brought to mind Kirsty MacColl's There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis. Fortunately, the resemblance ends there and I can safely pop down to the chip shop.

However, I digress, the main attraction here is the line-up. John Etheridge is never far off the radar but, somehow or other, Steve Waterman seems to have been maintaining a low profile these days probably due to teaching commitments and his regular work around town. This is unfortunate as he is, without doubt, up there among the top UK brass men and it would be good to hear him at a north east venue.

He certainly does the business here as, of course, does Etheridge.

Elvis Has Left the Building originally appeared on Aaron's first album, recorded in 2019, Fag Ash and Beer. and this, the Super Deluxe Version, has two takes of the song featuring the two master craftsmen backed up by a stellar crew which make for an enjoyable jazz/blues/soul seven plus minutes.
