Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: A Jazzy Christmas

Pianist/composer/bandleader Paul Edis is once again bringing his A Jazzy Christmas show to Tyneside and, for the first time, to County Durham and Wearside. Edis' all-star, ten-piece band routinely performs to a full house at Sage Gateshead. And little wonder, take a look at the names...Paul Edis (piano), Jo Harrop (vocals), Emma Fisk (violin), Matt Anderson (reeds), Faye Thompson (reeds), Graham Hardy (trumpet), Jason Holcomb (trombone), Megan Robinson (flute, piccolo), Andy Champion (bass) and drummer Matt MacKellar.

This year there is greater ambition with no fewer than three north east of England venues on the itinerary. The Gateshead date (Saturday 17 December) offers not one, but two opportunities to hear the ensemble with a matinee performance at 3:00pm followed by an evening performance at 8:00pm. Call the box office on 0191 443 4661. The previous evening (Friday 16) Paul Edis & Friends will be at St Cuthbert's Centre, Crook. It's a seven thirty start but, it's already a sell out! A waiting list has been opened, to add your name to the list, email: jazzatcrook@gmail.com. To conclude the mini 'up north' tour, A Jazzy Christmas calls into Sunderland's Fire Station on Monday 19 December. Check out the WEBSITE

MD Paul Edis promises new arrangements of festive favourites. Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells... Russell
