There was a lot of speculation as to who would be playing tonight instead of Steve Oakes who was still having car related problems but Ed Kainyek took over the role of bandleader and did a fine job of selecting some interesting tunes to play.
One member of this group that I don’t think I’ve seen here before was Richard Jones who played a Korg keyboard. I recall seeing him at the Creative Space venue a few times but he impressed me tonight with his solo work and I’d like to have heard him on the house upright.
It was a good idea to give bassman Gavin Barras a feature and his rendition of Polka Dots and Moonbeams was one of many highspots and his bowing skills were demonstrated to good effect during this ballad.
Another great tune that I always like to hear is Old Folks which makes me think of a great version by tenor legend Don Byas, although Ed, during his introduction, referred to a version by the vocal team of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross that he liked.
Ed picked a great selection of tunes for this gig and when he called Recado Bossa Nova I thought this could be a bit of a challenge but I was surprised how well the band played it. I wondered who had composed this catchy tune and after checking on the internet I found that it was Djama Ferreira. Lee Morgan and Hank Mobley recorded this tune on the Blue Note label and you can see a transcription of Hank’s tenor solo if you do a google search.
Once again we heard some inspiring music at the Railway and the next jazz night is Sunday Dec 11 with harmonica/vocalist Robin Sunflower.
